Marrakech: The Next Golfing Destination to Watch!

-By AVGM

After recently visiting Morocco to inspect three golf properties under our management, with a significant portion of time spent in Marrakech, I felt compelled to share insights in our latest Braemar blog.

Morocco has been a noteworthy golfing destination for quite some time, boasting a robust golf industry domestically and drawing significant tourism interest. However, Marrakech, in particular, is poised to emerge as golf's next "hot destination," and we're not just referring to the soaring temperatures!

Morocco's Rich Golfing Heritage

Golf has deep roots in Morocco, dating back nearly a century with esteemed clubs like the Royal Golf of Tangier, Royal Golf Mohammedia, and Royal Golf de Marrakech among the pioneers. The late King Hassan II was an avid golf enthusiast, fostering the sport's development during his reign. The 1990s witnessed a surge in new course constructions, aimed at attracting tourists, with notable additions like Amelkis and Palmeraie in Marrakech, Les Dunes and Golf du Soleil in Agadir, and Royal Golf El Jadida and Royal Golf de Fès.

Continuing this legacy, King Mohammed VI spearheaded golf development in the 21st century through initiatives like the Plan Azur 2010, resulting in the establishment of resorts such as the Gary Player Mazagan and Mogador Resorts. Presently, there are over 35 golf clubs and resorts accessible to the public in Morocco, with a new wave of courses opening or in progress under the Vision 2020 initiative, fueling renewed interest in Moroccan golf.

Marrakech: A Golfing Gem

Marrakech stands out as a prime contender for Morocco's golfing renaissance, and here's why:

  1. Diverse Golf Offerings: Marrakech boasts an impressive array of golf courses, including Royal Golf Marrakech, Palmeraie, Amelkis, Samanah Country Club, and Al Maaden, designed by acclaimed architects like Jack Nicklaus Design and Kyle Phillips. Additionally, smaller gems like the 9-hole Atlas Golf offer unique playing experiences.

  2. Upcoming Developments: In 2014, Marrakech will witness the debut of Assoufid (Marrakech Golf Club), Domaine de Royal Palm, Marrakech Golf City, and Noria Golf Club, each contributing to the city's burgeoning golf landscape. Noteworthy features include Assoufid's collaboration with Rocco Forte Hotels and Noria Golf Club's distinctive design by Steve Forrest of Hills & Forrest.

Beyond Golf: Marrakech's Allure

However, Marrakech's appeal extends beyond golf, making it a captivating destination in its own right. Renowned as the "Red" City, Marrakech's allure lies in its rich history, vibrant culture, and diverse offerings. From the ancient Medina and traditional riads to modern districts like Gueliz, Marrakech seamlessly blends tradition with modernity, offering a plethora of experiences for visitors.

Moreover, Marrakech boasts a well-developed tourism infrastructure, featuring luxury hotels like Four Seasons and La Mamounia, alongside traditional Moroccan riads, ensuring a memorable stay for every traveler.

Looking Ahead

As Marrakech emerges as a golfing hotspot, we anticipate further developments and exploration of Morocco's golf and hospitality offerings. My recent visit to Agadir and the upcoming Taghazout Bay project, including a Kyle Phillips-designed course, reaffirms Morocco's status as a burgeoning golf destination.
